RFID Steri-ThermoTAG™ – Autoclave-Resistant RFID Thermal-Transfer Labels

  • 12” omnidirectional read range* ensures easy scanning from all angles
  • Scan multiple containers, even without a clear line-of-sight**
  • Printable and encodable with UHF RFID thermal-transfer printers
  • Flexible UHF inlay allows permanent adhesion to a variety of surfaces such as plastic and glass
  • Temperature resistance from -60°C to +150°C (-76°F to +302°F) for long exposure and short-term up to +230°C/+446°F for 3 hours
  • Ideal for multiple standard autoclave sterilization cycles (+121°C/+250°F, 16.5 psi pressure, 20 minutes)

RFID technology has been incorporated into autoclave-resistant thermal-transfer labels to make a UHF RFID label suitable for the identification of various containers and surfaces that undergo steam and dry heat sterilization. RFID Steri-ThermoTAG™ labels are robust UHF RFID labels designed for autoclave procedures, combining printed visual information with encoded RFID data, making them an appealing solution for RFID identification and tracking of sterilized consumables, devices, and containers.
These flexible RFID labels have a permanent adhesive, suitable for direct application onto curved or flat plastic and glass surfaces while withstanding multiple autoclave sterilization cycles (+121°C/+250°F, 16.5 psi pressure, 20 minutes). They are well suited for identifying single-use medical devices or surgical and dental tools placed in sterilization pouches, as well as labware. Ideal for GMP and GLP operations, sterilization of drugs and reagents and wherever autoclave logging is required to comply with regulations.
Using an RFID thermal-transfer printer and our recommended smudge-proof RR-class of ink ribbons, these passive UHF RFID labels (Class 1, Gen 2) can be printed and RFID encoded with up to 32 hexadecimal characters of data. This information can be in the form of sterilization data, batch #’s, sterilizer ID, user ID, cycle number, sterilization date, 1D and 2D barcodes, as well as serialized RFID or printed data. RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels are compatible with handheld, fixed, and integrated UHF RFID readers and designed to integrate with RFID sterilization management systems to control and monitor the autoclaving process.
RFID Steri-ThermoTAG label’s color and size can be customized upon request.
* When using our recommended RFID reader. Read range can vary according to the RFID reader being used.
** Labels should not be enclosed by metal surfaces as this may cause interference that can affect their ability to be scanned/read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels are thermal-transfer printable and require an ink ribbon to be printed. To achieve the proper printout, these labels require an RR-class ink ribbon of the same width or larger.

Yes, an RFID printer can accurately encode these labels when printing. We recommend the Zebra ZD621R UHF RFID thermal-transfer printer.

Yes, specialized software is required to properly encode your labels. We would recommend BarTender Pro and ZebraDesigner3 Pro.

No, RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels are not designed for metal surfaces. They were specially designed for glass and plastic surfaces. Please contact us for RFID identification solutions intended for metal surfaces.

Yes, these RFID labels can withstand extended exposure to high-heat conditions, up to +150°C/+302°F as well as up to 3hrs at 230°C/446°F.

No, the RFID labels must reach an operating temperature of between (-35°C to +85°C / -31°F to +185°F) for the RFID label to be read using the RFID reader.

The printout and RFID data (writing and reading) of these RFID labels can resist up to 20 cycles depending the application surface. Prior testing by the end user is recommended to confirm suitability.

Yes, an RFID reader is required to access the encoded data. It can be handheld, fixed, and integrated. We recommend the Unitech Handheld UHF RFID Reader for mobility, reach, and ease of use. This reader can read the UHF RFID chip and scan 1D and 2D barcodes.

Place the UHF RFID reader at a maximum of 12” (30.5 cm) away from the sample in any direction. However, the read range can vary according to the RFID reader being used.

Yes, RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels are compatible with both regulations. Interrogate these labels with a UHF reader capable of reading the frequency band.

No, these labels employ UHF RFID technology and thus cannot be read in another band frequency apart from NFC RFID labels. Thus, a dedicated UHF RFID reader is needed. For other RFID labels customized with NFC RFID technology, contact our technical support team.

No, these RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels have a permanent adhesive, that is not made for easy removal.

Yes, RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels can be offered in a variety of colors. For more information, contact our technical support team.

No, please contact us for our complete customization options.

The UHF RFID chip (Class 1, Gen2) of the RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels can be encoded with up to 32 hexadecimal characters.

Yes, RFID Steri-ThermoTAG™ contain read-write UHF RFID chips. Thus, you can rewrite the EPC memory bank up to 100,000 times if the permalock feature is not active.

Yes, you can scan/read multiple RFID labels at the same time within the interrogation timeout (in seconds), even without a direct line-of-sight to the UHF RFID reader.

No, these labels don’t require a battery to be functional because they employ passive RFID technology.

Barcoding or label design software can be used to create templates that conform to the size of your label. You can then insert design elements within the template for easy printing.

Yes, we can provide our RFID Steri-ThermoTAG labels preprinted with full-color graphics and logos, as well as variable or serialized information from a database. Learn more about our custom printing options.
