Description

RFID Cryo-WrapTAG™ – Wrap-Around Cryogenic RFID Thermal-Transfer Labels

  • The labels are self-laminating when wrapped around vials protecting the information from abrasion
  • Visual and electronic information is resistant to incidental exposure to harsh chemicals and solvents
  • Flexible UHF antenna and cryogenic adhesive allow excellent adhesion, especially on curved surfaces (cryo vials, microtubes)
  • Ideal for cryogenic storage*, no lag time when scanning/reading multiple items at the same time
  • 12” omnidirectional read range**ensures quick, easy, and accurate reading from every angle, without direct line-of-sight required

We have integrated RFID technology into our self-laminating cryogenic labels to create our new RFID Cryo-WrapTAG™ labels. These labels combine RFID technology and the reliable wrap-around feature to ensure your cryo vials are securely identified with visual and electronic information, for maximum data integrity.

RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels were specifically designed to withstand short and long-term sample preservation under ultra-low temperatures and cryogenic laboratory conditions; including in liquid and vapor phase liquid nitrogen (-196°C/-321°F), lab freezers (-80°C/-112°F), and transportation on dry ice. They can also withstand temperatures up to +100°C (+212°F), making them suitable for identifying tubes*** immersed in 37°C water baths*** (up to 1.5”/38 mm immersion*). These cryogenic RFID labels are intended for research organizations, health care and biopharmaceutical companies, biotechnology research centers, molecular diagnostic laboratories, fertility clinics, and any lab where sample identification and tracking are a high priority.

Our RFID labels can be printed and encoded using dedicated RFID thermal-transfer printers. When printed with our recommended smudge-proof RR-class of ribbons, the printout obtained is resistant to alcohol spraying/swabbing and sanitizing wipes. The passive UHF RFID chip (Class 1, Gen 2) can be encoded with up to 32 hexadecimal characters of information. These labels are compatible with handheld, fixed, and integrated RFID readers. Furthermore, they can be integrated with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) to promote the identification and traceability of samples, as well as improve process efficiency to comply with quality regulations. RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels can also be hand written with our cryo-markers.

RFID Cryo-WrapTAG label size can be customized upon request.

* Labels should not be enclosed by metal surfaces as this may cause interference that can affect their ability to be scanned/read.

** When using our recommended RFID reader. Read range can vary according to the RFID reader being used.

*** Prior testing of these labels on end user’s vials/tubes is strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels are thermal-transfer printable and require an ink ribbon to be printed. To achieve the proper printout, these labels require an RR-class ribbon of the same width or larger.

RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels can be printed in most common thermal-transfer printers, but for simultaneous RFID encoding, you will require a thermal-transfer printer capable of RFID encoding.

Yes, the Zebra ZD500R, Zebra ZD621R, SATO CT$-LX, and SATO CT4NX RFID printers have all been tested and can accurately encode these labels when printing. Please contact us about proper gap sensor placement and the suitability of other printer models.

Yes, specialized software is required to properly encode your labels. We would recommend  BarTender Pro and ZebraDesigner3 Pro.

Please consult our handy sizing guide, where you will find recommendations for the most common vial/tube sizes.

Yes, Cryo-WrapTAG labels can be used to label samples prior to storing them in low-temperature freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks.

No, the RFID labels are not compatible with automated print-and-apply systems.

Yes, an RFID reader is required to access the encoded data. It can be handheld, fixed, integrated, and cryogenic (Dewar neck). We recommend the Unitech Handheld UHF RFID Reader for mobility, reach, and ease of use. This reader is able to read the UHF RFID chip and scan 1D and 2D barcodes.

RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels can be read while the samples are in liquid nitrogen (i.e., in a plastic, temporary storage container), but the cryo vials cannot be surrounded by metal, for example, when placed inside a liquid nitrogen tank.

RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels can be read while the labels are immersed up to 1.5″/ 38 mm in a 37°C water bath. Cryo vials should ideally be towards the middle of the water bath, away from the metal sides. Prior testing of RFID readability while immersed in other liquids is strongly recommended.

No, these labels employ UHF RFID technology and thus can be interrogated in another band frequency apart from NFC RFID labels. Thus, a dedicated UHF RFID reader is needed.  For Cryo-WrapTAG labels customized with NFC RFID technology, contact our technical support team.

Place the UHF RFID reader at a maximum of 12″ (30.5 cm) away from the sample in any direction. However, the read range can vary according to the UHF RFID reader being used.

Yes, Cryo-WrapTAG labels are compatible with both regulations. Interrogate these labels with a UHF reader capable of reading the frequency band.

The UHF RFID chip (Class 1, Gen2) of the RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels can be encoded with up to 32 hexadecimal characters.

Yes, RFID Cryo-WapTAG™ contain read-write UHF RFID chips. Thus, you can rewrite the EPC memory bank up to 100,000 times if the permalock feature is not active.

Yes, you can scan/read multiple RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels at the same time within the interrogation timeout (in seconds), even without a direct line-of-sight of the UHF RFID reader.

No, RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels are battery-free. These labels do not require a battery to be functional because they employ passive RFID technology.

Barcoding or label design software can be used to create templates that conform to the size of your label. You can then insert design elements within the template for easy printing.

Yes, we can provide our RFID Cryo-WrapTAG labels preprinted with full-color graphics and logos, as well as variable or serialized information from a database. Please consult our technical support team for details regarding custom encoding and other custom printing options.
