Description

RFID ParafiTAG™ – Xylene-Resistant RFID Labels for Paraffin Wax Blocks

  • 12” omnidirectional read range*, without direct line-of-sight ensures quick, easy, and accurate reading from every angle
  • Read multiple tissue embedded paraffin wax blocks at the same time**
  • Adhere to hard to stick surfaces, such as Teflon/PTFE/PFA surfaces
  • Withstand exposure to harsh chemicals and solvents
  • Readable and writable in histopathology facilities

RFID ParafiTAG™ labels incorporate proven RFID technology with a strong adhesive that adheres to paraffin wax blocks. These chemical-resistant labels are ideal for short- and long-term storage of Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks and provide accurate and quick identification of tissue-embedded cassettes, improving cassette management and tracking. These RFID labels are specifically designed to integrate with specimen management systems to ensure the traceability of samples, proper recording of workflows, and simplify auditing, thus preventing specimen loss and misidentification. In addition, the recorded visual and electronic data is resistant to water and harsh chemicals, such as xylene and alcohol immersion, when applied to glass microscope slides. RFID ParafiTAG labels are intended for histopathology, cytopathology, diagnostic centers, hospitals, research organizations, biopharmaceutical companies, and wherever tracing and identification of (FFPE) blocks is required.
These chemical-resistant RFID labels will also adhere to other hard-to-stick surfaces such as Teflon, Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA), including PTFE chemical bottles, containers, tubing and hoses, and catheters. RFID ParafiTAG labels allow labware, lab tubing, and medical devices used in the laboratory to be identified and tracked in LIMS or hospital systems to monitor patient treatment.
RFID ParafiTAG labels (Class 1, Gen 2) are compatible with handheld, fixed, and integrated UHF RFID readers. Using dedicated RFID thermal-transfer printers, they can be printed and encoded with up to 32 hexadecimal characters of readable, writable, and serialized information. The printout obtained when using our recommended XAR-class of ink ribbons, along with the electronic components of these labels, resist exposure to xylene, toluene, alcohol, and other solvents and chemicals without the need for additional protection when applied on paraffin and Teflon surfaces.
The size of the RFID ParafiTAG label can be customized upon request.
* When using our recommended RFID reader. Read range can vary according to the RFID reader being used.
** Labels should not be enclosed by metal surfaces as this may cause interference that can affect their ability to be scanned/read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, RFID ParafiTAG labels are thermal-transfer printable and require an ink ribbon to be printed. To achieve the proper printout, these labels require a xylene and solvent-resistant XAR-Class ink ribbon of the same width or larger.

Yes, an RFID thermal-transfer printer can accurately encode these labels when printing. We recommend the Zebra ZD621R UHF RFID thermal-transfer printer.

No, RFID ParafiTAG labels are battery-free. These labels don’t require a battery to be functional as they employ passive RFID technology.

Yes, specialized software is required to properly encode your labels. We would recommend BarTender Pro and ZebraDesigner3 Pro.

The UHF RFID chip (Class 1, Gen2) of the RFID ParafiTAG labels can be encoded with up to 32 hexadecimal characters.

Yes, RFID ParafiTAG™ contain read-write UHF RFID chips. Thus, you can rewrite the EPC memory bank up to 100,000 times if the permalock feature is not active.

No, RFID ParafiTAG labels are designed for cassettes already embedded in paraffin wax and storage of Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks.

Yes, these labels have a strong permanent adhesive that will adhere to hard-to-stick surfaces, such as low-surface energy plastics, Teflon/PFE, PFA, and parchment paper.

Yes, RFID ParafiTAG can be applied on the PTFE flat and curved containers, such as rods, funnels, chemical bottles, and jars.

No, ParafiTAG labels are coated with a permanent chemical-resistant adhesive that is not made for easy removal.

Yes, they will resist xylene, toluene, alcohol, and other solvents typically found in histology labs.

No, these RFID labels do not resist autoclaving conditions. For RFID autoclave-resistant labels, we recommend RFID Steri-ThermoTAG™ labels.

Yes, an RFID reader is required to access the encoded data. It can be handheld, fixed, and integrated. We recommend the Unitech Handheld UHF RFID Reader for its mobility, reach, and ease of use. This reader can read UHF RFID chips and scan 1D and 2D barcodes.

You can use our recommended UHF RFID reader at a maximum of 12” (30.5 cm) away from the sample in any direction. However, the read range will vary according to the RFID reader being used.

Yes, RFID ParafiTAG labels can be read while applied to glass microscope slides fully immersed (up to 1”/25 mm) in xylene, alcohol, and acetone when using our recommended UHF RFID reader. Prior testing of RFID readability while immersed in other liquids is strongly recommended.

Yes, RFID ParafiTAG labels are compatible with both regulations. Interrogate these labels with a UHF reader capable of reading the frequency band.

No, these labels employ UHF RFID technology and thus cannot be interrogated in another frequency band. Thus, a dedicated UHF RFID reader is needed. For ParafiTAG labels customized with NFC RFID technology, contact our technical support team.

Yes, you can scan/read multiple RFID ParafiTAG labels at the same time within the interrogation timeout period, even without a direct line-of-sight to the UHF RFID reader.

Barcoding or label design software can be used to create templates that conform to the size of your label. You can then insert design elements within the template for easy printing.

Yes, we can provide our RFID ParafiTAG labels preprinted with full-color graphics and logos, as well as variable or serialized information from a database. Learn more about our custom printing options.

Please consult our technical support team for details regarding custom encoding and other customization options, such as size.
