Microscope Slide Over-Labeling

Histology consulting facilities are tasked with re-processing a large number of tissue slides originating from a variety of locations. This requires the incoming microscope slides to be re-labeled with a new unique identifier to ensure compatibility with the facility’s internal digital scanners and databases. LabTAG offers an innovative solution to this labeling challenge, designed to improve efficiency without compromising the information and integrity of the original label.

The Challenge of Re-Labeling Slides

Slides received from external clients or departments will need to be re-identified with internal case information without compromising the information and integrity of the original label. Ideally, the existing barcode should be obscured and replaced with a new unique identifier, without obscuring the rest of the information.

The new label should be placed at the top and on the front of the slide for best results. However, double labeling may cause coverslippers to malfunction due to the extra thickness of a double labeled slide, while placing the label on the back can result in the slide being slightly raised, altering the required focus used by the microscope.

The Solution to Tissue Slide Over-Labeling

Histo-PinTAG™ was specifically designed to address this challenge. Its patent-pending design incorporates a small dot label connected to a printable rectangle. The dot label can be used to obscure the existing 2D barcode, while the rest of the label, containing a new barcode, can be detached and placed beneath the original label.

Moreover, Histo-PinTAG labels have a glove-friendly adhesive, made for easy application and ensuring they can be cleanly removed without damaging the original label or leaving behind any residue. The removable labels are provided in a sharp yellow color that visually indicates that the microscope slides have been re-identified.

Applying Histo-PinTAG Labels

After Histo-PinTAG has been printed using any standard thermal-transfer printer, the circle portion of the Histo-PinTAG label is affixed over the existing barcode, and the rectangular portion of the label, containing a new barcode, is then snapped-off and affixed just below the original label. The perforations between the two parts of the label make separating them quick and easy, requiring a simple twist to detach the rectangular portion of the label from the dot. The resulting re-labeled slide is now ready for processing, with new information and without interference from the original barcode, ensuring full compatibility with digital slide scanners.

Covering Up Existing Information

We also offer removable blackout labels in case the entire existing label needs to be obscured and replaced with new information. These thermal-transfer printable labels are designed for use with microscope slides, providing resistance to incidental chemical exposure. Their removable adhesive ensures the labels can be easily removed without damaging information underneath or leaving adhesive residue. Can be printed with barcodes, alphanumeric text, as well as variable data.

Laminating Existing Labels

Our transparent slide labels are designed to identify microscope slides subjected to common histological preparation procedures and will withstand immersion in various histology chemicals, including xylene and xylene substitutes. As they will not obscure any pre-existing information, they can be used to over-label already identified microscope slides, offering added protection against harsh chemicals. They can also be printed with text and barcodes to add additional information without concealing the original data.

Industries Served

The unique labels for microscope slides are a perfect solution for hospital histology labs, consulting facilities, and other testing laboratories that receive labeled tissue slides for analysis.
